Discussion:
Re-implementing Shadow

One thing that hurt Outline Tracker is that it tried to be both an
outliner and a to-do app, and I didn't have the time to make it do
both well.  Despite the overlap, those are two different things that
require some different design choices, particularly in search.

I'm open to big discussion about what it needs to be, since
eveyrones idea are different. An interesting discussion if nothing else ;)

Always a trouble spot; I always had a lot of pain in trying to
'serve everyone', but withotu going the full database 'hyopercards' sort
of route .. you want it to 'go easy' like an outliner, but do all this
similar-but-different jobs. A tough line :)

I've been using ShadowPlan for years both as an outliner and, to some extent, a to-do app. I'm sure I'm not a typical user, but I'd like to put in a request for the Windows desktop version to continue to develop. I've given up on hand-helds and don't see any promising smartphone or tablets in the near future -- I'm speaking just for myself here.

There are just a few things I'd like to see implemented on the desktop:
- an easy way to search by date (yes, this is really a reporting function, sort of a "database thing." I can write XSLT to do this, but Shadow uses that dreadful Palm date, so I have to use PHP or Pascal or something to manipulate the date. Doable, but annoying.

- an easy was to manage tags and filters. Tags could only be created on the Palm and copied to the destop. Now that my Palm is dead, I'd like to be able to create these on the desktop. Again, I could go into the XML and kludge something myself.

Just dreaming of the perfect desktop outliner. :-)

I currently don't have a build environment up for Shadow Desktop
(which is now on an unsupported version of QT, fun :) -- it would not be
too brutal to set up a build env, since I'm quite anal about making things
portable and convenient, but still.. a fair amount of work, and time is
not what it is unless I shift major gears around.

Modding some tags into the XML is pretty trivial (assuming you
don't want to sync them with a Palm.)

Reporting against date is a little more annoying, though; perl,
python, etc, to the rescue I'm afraid :/
