Discussion:
Date changes when opening project in desktop

I'm running v.4.3.1 both on my Palm and my computer. The Palm is an
old IIIxe running OS 4.1. I've got a strange problem: When I open a
file on the desktop application some of the target dates I originally
set on the Palm are changed to one day later. In one case the target
date is the 7th of November on the Palm, when I open the file on the
desktop it changes that date to the 8th of December.

Does someone know what's going on here?

Hermann

Don't know exactly, but I do recall someone discussing a similar
problem on this board a week or two ago. I think it had something to
do with time zones or something, but check out the archives for the
exact details.

It's basically the same problem. However, I still don't know what to
do about it ... Anyone got an idea? It makes using the desktop
application pretty difficult when *some* of the dates are one day
late. It means that I've got to check all dates on the desktop and on
the Palm, and that's not really all that convenient.

I think the problem is a matter of just a few seconds.. if you'r
ein certain timezones and DST is kicking in, then dates you set with
'tomorrow' might show up a few seconds off (thus the wrong 'day' but only
by a few seconds, or maybe an hour?).. but if you set it to tomorrow via
picking a date/time, you're cool.

I'll be fixing it up.

Some more information: The problem first occured when I changed the
clock of the Palm to wintertime last weekend. In all cases I had
selected the date via the picker. No time selected at all. Only two of
the 25 or so dates in that particular project changed, so it's not
*that* bad ... Still, I don't think I'll want to use the destop
application until this is sorted out.

I'm the guy who reported the original problem (Message 21515 ff). It
hasn't gone away. It is still almost all of my dates that are
incorrect on SPDT. Needless to say, I have abandoned using SPDT until
this problem is fixed (yes please Jeff).

Seconded. SPDT is pretty much unuseable as it is for my purposes. I
simply can't take any chances with dates being changed.

Can you please give some indication of when you will be able to tackle
this reasonably serious bug Jeff? Let me know if you would like me to
send you a file that has the problem.

Mark.

The dates do not change; they are displayed incorrectly for
certain 'edge conditions' - time zone combined with how you set the date
combined with other factors such as locale and time displays. I'll be
looking into it shortly. (ie: If you sent me your file, it would work
fine. Its how it is displayed is the problem, and thst depends on your
environment.)

Thanks for clarifying this Jeff. I have checked out what happens and
observe as follows:

If an item is entered in SPHH, given a date and time (note that this
seems to only happen for me when I have specified a time for the item
as well as a date - not fully checked this out yet) and then
synchronised, it may display in SPDT a day later.

If the date for the same item is corrected in SPDT and then
synchronised, it displays correctly on both SPDT & SPHH. The date
will continue to be reported correctly provided the item is not edited
in SPHH.

If the item's time or date is altered in SPHH and then synchronised,
then the date is again incorrectly reported in SPDT.

Mark.

Seconded once again. As things are at the moment I can't
really use SPDT, and with some of the projects coming up
that's a major problem.

More on that date change bug:

I created a small new project a couple of
days ago. I prepared the outline on my Palm,
synchronized and then put in a few dates. After
sychronizing again about half the dates had
changed by one day on the Palm. I didn't have
any times set at all.

The time zones both on the Palm and my desktop
computer are set to -1 GMT. I'm running OS 4.1
my Palm.

Hi Jeff.

My Shadow Plan Desktop falled into the old bug of the wrong dates.
The bug was first discovered on the year 2005 and you can find track of it on the current thread.

Jeff, you mentioned a alpha release that solves that bug; didi you got such a alpha to send me? If not, could you please look into that bug?

It should be easy to solve it: simply change Shadow Plan Desktop so as it should use the real date+hour (user timezone setting) instead of date+hour on the GMT-6 settings as on the current bugged Shadow Plan Desktop.

Please read below the true origin of the bug.

Many thanks.

Roberto.

----DETAILS ON WHY THIS BUG

I investigated a bit by decoding the XML file saved by Shadow Plan Desktop and I easily found that why the bug happens:
Shadow Desktop picks and uses as its date+hour always the timezone GMT-6, no matter the actual user setting of the timezone of the PC.

So:

-if I set the timezone of my PC to a GMT-6 (USA and Canada), NO BUG arises.
Example:
--> date+hour on PC after setting it on GMT-6 = 2012-04-27/08:42PM
--> date+hour on saved XML file = 3418404120 = 2012-04-27/08:42PM (no bug)
(for explanation on the coding rule for dates+hours, see below);

-if I set the timezone of my PC to my real timezone (GMT+1, Central Europe), every date+time saved by Shadow Plan Desktop is actually saved into XML file 7 hours earlier, thus still using the GMT-6 date+hour.
Example:
--> date+hour on PC after setting it on GMT+1 = 2012-04-28/03:42AM
--> date+hour on saved XML file = 3418404120 = 2012-04-27/08:42PM (BUG!, 7 hours earlier than the date+hour on the PC)

That is true for all date types:
-hhCreateTime
-hhTargetTime
-hhStartTime
-hhFinishTime
and for the selections:
-picker
-yesterday
-tomorrow
-day after tomorrow
-friday
-monday
-week from today
-next month
but not for the selection:
-plus one week (it simply adds 7 days to the previous date+hour)

Coding rule for XML date+hour:
-On XML file, every date+time is represented by the total number of seconds elapsed since the date+time 1904-01-01/00:00AM
-every XML date+time earlier than 1970-01-01/00:00AM is shown into Shadow Plan Desktop (and, I suppose on Shadow Plan on Handheld) as 1970-01-01/00:00AM.
