Discussion:
Converting SP to something Android

Okay, so Jeff isn't very keen on doing Shadow Plan for Android.

Fine; we got a good decade out of his product...

Does anyone a way, or maybe an idea for converting our Shadow Plan databases from Palm to something importable (usable) in an Android format, possibly Outliner for Android?

I'm just looking at the massive pile of lists I have in my T|X that I will have to rebuild from scratch, otherwise.

Not enough energy left right now; I'm working on a small project
for iOS and Android as a testing ground for a framework; with _luck_, it
coudl turn into a foundation by which Shadow can be reborn, but thats a
big IF at this point. But I amn doing some starter work in that direction
(working on it right this minute in fact)

Did alright :)

The author of Outliner for iOS is around, and probabyl same fellow
for Android; its not too hard to convert Shadow to other formats, as I
built in a export/import function into Shadow Desktop, and have worked
with a number of current app authors to help them set up migration plans.

I do try to help, straight to the end :)

I have Outliner and it has import/export with Bonsai CSV whatever that
is. I installed NoteLynx and am trying to make sense out of the xml
that is used to export and import. I thought maybe I could make an
export template that would work somewhat.

Well, I've bought an iPad. Version 2 without cellular capability, but it's enough for my needs.

But it lacks a certain something.
I've tried several free and free versions of paid project managers and to-do lists, but none of those are speaking to me the way my Shadow does. I'm willing to pay for good software, but I've grown so accustomed to Shadow on the Palm that I'm still carrying the Tungsten.

Jeff: I now understand your dilemma; there are dozens of outliners and manager packages on the iOS. Some are free, some are cheap, some are small in footprint. But none of them seem to have anything close to the flexibility of Shadow. However, I'm sure that takng on all that competition would take very deep pockets, and I can understand if you're not up to the task.

I really don't want to leave Shadow. I like its power and flexibility, and it's options. But in case Shadow cannot come to the iPad and make it the perfect tablet, does anyone here have an opinion on a reasonably small app that can resonably take the place of Shadow Plan on my new iPad? Jeff, you mentioned Outliner, but there are several apps that could match that name.

Thanks for the great software, Jeff! Im not leaving my Tungsten behind yet, simply because of your work.

Sincerely,

Welcome to the post Palm world. Your question has been posted many a time on this group and I have yet to see anyone recommend a suitable replacement. Perhaps someone has found that app and will post a reply for you here. I'd love to find one. It don't hold out much hope.

I'm on an iPhone, which I like a lot, but have not seen a replacement for Shadow. I was not what you would call a power user, more a compulsive list maker - kept track of lots of data, to-do's, planning, packing lists and general all round memory support. I tend to use a combination of Evernote and the native Reminders app.

Best of luck,

Don

Gosfrei,

For sophisticated task management I have been fairly impressed with MyLifeOrganised. I'm not sure it would match your needs, though. There are IOS and Android versions.

Thanks, David. Like Don, I'm not a power user, but Shadow was and still is a great list maker.

Now that I have the iPad, I realize that most people use it the same way they would a PDA. But I don't have access to OS10.6, so I am going to have to go without the iCloud and syncing with the big 'putter. That definitely limits the usefulness of Evernote, since it's difficult to transfer text without emailing it. And the copy/paste function of the iPad isn't great. At least, I haven't found out how do use it effectively.

I've had a quick look at MyifeOrganized, and will look at it agai later; for now, I have to fly out the door to a meeting.

Thanks to both of you,
Neil

At the risk of going too far off topic. Evernote doesn't need iCloud to sync. I've used it for years, syncing without iCloud, never had any issues. It is sort of set up like iCloud, all you need is internet access to sync what's on your machine to a common server. when you open Evernote on another machine it downloads the updated info to that machine. Slick, easy and automatic. I've never had to resort to emailing text to get data from one machine to another. My use is primarily with my laptop and iPhone, it would be the same with your iPad/desktop combo.

It works cross platform and also has a browser based web access in case you want to access your Evernote data from a computer that doesn't have Evernote installed. There is a paid version with extra features, but the free one is all I've ever needed.

It took me a while to warm up to it and it has some neat features that Shadow didn't(doesn't?) have but I still miss Shadow.

Best,

Don

Its even worse.. with Windows 8 looking to be really quite a
mess.. join the Walled Garden of MS, or be left aside and destitude over
time! OSX with Apples walled garden (though not enforced - yet - on
desktop), and the plethora of Android and iOS devices .. steep competition
across all platforms, with many good apps, and many crummy ones.. but
spread over many similar niches, overlapping niches.. penetrating that
tangle, to find the right people .. very hard :)

I'm not up to it right now, we'll see what the futrue holds.. I've
got an iOS/Android app in the cooker now (a game), we'll see how far it
gets (its a huge project, this one) but its using some frameworks and I'm
builkding some infrastrucuture that could be used for a future Shadow. But
we'll see, one step at a time. I don't have the spare cycles like I used
to ... 3 kids more than in the Shadow prime days :)

It is still amazing, after all these years, you're all still here
... we really did somethign back then :)

Hi,

I use JOutliner on both my Mac and my iPod touch, it sync pretty well.

There is also Outliner that I used a bit but now I prefer JOutliner.
